Nicola Gardner - Juniors co-ordinator

Purton has a thriving junior section and is a very important part of the club. Junior membership entitles
children to use the courts up to 6pm and attendance at the supervised sessions on a Saturday morning
which are run by Nicola Gardner.

The club has a long history of providing volunteer run sessions going back as far as the 1970’s when
Norene Richardson passed on her tennis playing experience to the youngsters. Norene was joined in the
1980’s by Margaret Belt who ran an additional session for the beginners.

Nicola started helping Norene at the age of 18 and took over the leadership of the Junior section in
1994. She has been involved in tennis since the age of 9 when she joined the club with the rest of the
family. She took part in a talent spotting afternoon run by Wiltshire tennis in the school holidays when 10
and was invited to their coaching sessions the following winter. She represented Wiltshire from the U12
age group right through to the Ladies’ team, for whom she played at County Week for 16 years. She
also was invited to play in the U12 and U14 Nationals at Eastbourne. Nicola started playing for the
Purton adult teams when she was 13 and from the age of 14 has been ever present in the Ladies’ A.
Nicola has been helped for many years by Teresa Miles, without whom these sessions could not take
place. Children of all abilities are welcomed and encouraged to have fun while improving their tennis
skills in the hope that a life time love of tennis is instilled.

Teams are entered in the Wiltshire League and an annual singles tournament is held every September to
crown the junior champions.

Nicola runs various Juniors sessions throughout the year.  To find out what she has planned for this year, please contact Nicola via email at: nicolagardner444@btinternet.com
